Imran

Imran’s Bio

A former journalist, Imran found inspiration in everyday occurrences and lived experiences. Journalism was a creative outlet for Imran to listen and share people’s stories. But after moving to Australia from Bangladesh in 2008, he was confronted with a language barrier and found it difficult to share people’s stories in an unfamiliar language. Details were being lost in translation. To overcome this barrier, Imran turned to photography as a way to communicate. It was a medium he had always been interested in and picking up the camera again only increase his passion for the art. This led Imran to study photography further through classes at Melbourne Polytechnic. During this time, Imran also worked on a variety of short and long term projects. In 2017 Imran was awarded a Mobility Grant from the State Government of Victoria which allowed him to travel to Japan and document daily life there. In the same year, Imran was nominated for a ‘Place Patterns’ project, a cultural development project presented by Wyndham City with support from Creative Victoria. This project resulted in Imran showcasing a public exhibition in 2018 called ‘Same/Different’ and publishing a book of the same name. ‘Same/Different’ was a photographic investigation into the cultural habits of new and old Australia as revealed by objects attached to their rear-view mirrors. Over the course of three years, Imran discretely captured images of trinkets he observed hanging from car revision mirrors or sitting on dashboards in vehicles around Wyndham City. In 2018, Imran also participated in a seven day storytelling workshop with famous documentary photographer, William Yang. This led to Imran presenting a projected photography performance called ‘The Story Only I Can Tell’ alongside William Yang at the Wyndham Cultural Centre. In 2019, Imran nominated as Emerging Cultural Ambassador of Multicultural Arts Victoria and became facilitator of Photography at Saltwater Art Studio at Point Cook. In the same year he received a Wyndham Arts Assist grant from Multicultural Arts Victoria and Gandel Philanthropy. His ‘Green Wedge’ project is to capture the transformation of Werribee South as new residential development encroaches upon existing farmland. Throughout this time, Imran established his business, Westend Photography, and carved out his place as an accomplished corporate photographer, working with small businesses and large companies alike on corporate branding, personal branding and individual headshots.
